Use Mahara from Claude or ChatGPT: find freelancers and manage services with your AI assistant
How to connect Claude, Claude Code or ChatGPT to Mahara: clients search services with no account, freelancers let their agent help manage their listings, and what an agent can and cannot do.
Mahara now connects directly to AI assistants through MCP, the open protocol assistants use to talk to websites and services. You can ask Claude or ChatGPT to find a freelancer on Mahara, or, as a freelancer, let your agent help write and update your services, without leaving the conversation.
Two ways to connect
| Clients | Freelancers | |
|---|---|---|
| Purpose | Find services and freelancers | Manage your services on Mahara |
| Account needed? | No | Yes, with your approval |
| Connector URL | https://mahara.sy/api/mcp/public |
https://mahara.sy/api/mcp |
For clients: search Mahara from your assistant
Add https://mahara.sy/api/mcp/public as a new connector in your assistant. No Mahara account is needed, and the assistant only sees what any visitor sees on the site: published services, freelancers' public names, prices and ratings.
Try asking:
- "Find a logo designer on Mahara under $50 who delivers within a week."
- "Show me the details of service G-000123 on Mahara."
- "Who are the best-rated WordPress developers on Mahara?"
The assistant gives you each service's link. Ordering, payment and messaging happen on mahara.sy only, and your payment stays held by Mahara until you receive and confirm the work.
For freelancers: let your agent help with your services
Sign in, then open Connect an AI agent in the dashboard sidebar for the connector URL and step-by-step instructions for Claude, Claude Code and ChatGPT. When you connect, Mahara shows a consent screen listing exactly what the agent may do.
Try asking:
- "Read my Mahara profile, suggest a new service that fits my skills, and save it as a draft."
- "List my services on Mahara and the status of each."
- "Make the description of my service G-000123 clearer for clients, and show me the change before saving it."
What an agent can and cannot do
Can, with the permissions you approve: read your profile, services and orders; create service drafts; edit your services and send them for publication, only after showing you the change in the chat and getting your explicit yes.
Never: touch your money, payout methods or withdrawals; message anyone; change your email, password or security settings; read another member's data.
Mahara staff review everything an agent writes before clients see it. If an agent edits a live service, it is hidden until we approve the change, and you are notified each time.
Security and privacy
- You never give your password to an assistant: you approve the connection on Mahara's own consent page.
- Disconnect at any time from the dashboard; the agent stops immediately.
- Access ends automatically if you change your password or your account is suspended.
- See our privacy policy for how we handle your data.
